3rd Annual Lisa’s Legacy RunLike
posted on September 15, 2011
Like the turning of the leaves on the Autumn trees, The Lisa’s Legacy 5K Run Walk has become an Autumnal event to look forward to with each new Fall. After the hot and stifling Ohio summer we just had, I’m looking forward to the cooler weather on October 2nd when this year’s race will be run in the beautiful surroundings of University Circle. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever with music, snacks (including the fabulous pizza from Luigi’s restaurant in Akron), awards and prizes. Along with a dry wick Tee, all pre registered adult race registrants are entered to win an iTouch with a sport band. Participants who secure donations for their run will receive a Lisa’s Legacy lapel pin. Fundraisers who raise $500 or more are entered to win an iPad.
As usual, I’ll be there before and after the race to sign copies of Lisa’s Story and to meet and talk with the participants. All of the proceeds form the book sales and the race itself go to the Lisa’s Legacy Fund for cancer research and education at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center which will be the starting point for this year’s race. For more information and to register, simply go to www.lisaslegacyfund.org
I’ve just heard that preregistrations are running ahead of last year, so come on out for a great run, and a great time in support of a great cause. See you there.

When I jumped everyone in the Funkyverse ahead in time in 2007 and I didn’t do the same with the cast of Crankshaft, a number of my good and gentle readers lamented the fact that I’d no longer be able to do any crossovers between the two strips. Well, no longer say no longer. In cartoonland, anything is possible if you just wish for it hard enough, and this past two weeks a few sharp eyed readers have spotted the fact that the young softball player in Crankshaft has the same name as Les’ intended in Funky. I’ve received e-mails from several readers wanting to know if this was the same person, and indeed it is. This will all lead up to a nifty little crossover in in both strips this coming Saturday, September 3rd… but it’s a surprise so don’t tell anyone and we’ll just keep it between us. Okay?

I’ve been receiving numerous questions about this past Sunday’s strip so here’s the back story on it. Sometime over the winter I heard the Rodney Crowell song ” ‘Til I Gain Control Again” and was knocked sideways by the beautiful lyrics. I often use song lyrics as a soundtrack for events in Funky and I thought that these would be perfect for an anniversary strip for Funky and Holly. As I began looking for a Sunday slot, I realized that my own 40th wedding anniversary fell on a Sunday this year. So I set about getting permission to secure the lyrics and chose Montoni’s as the obvious setting for the celebration in the strip.
Now Montoni’s, as I’ve explained before, is based on the real Luigi’s located in Akron, Ohio. I suddenly thought that holding a surprise party for my wife Cathy at the real Luigi’s on the same day the strip ran would be kind of cool. Luigi’s went out of their way to accommodate my plans even going so far as to putting a mix CD which included the Rodney Crowell song on their juke box. In short, somehow I was able to pull off the surprise, and it turned out to be one of those perfect days that life allows us once awhile. If you ever want to visit Montoni’s, all you have to do is drop by Luigi’s and you’re there. The place is magical, the people are wonderful, and it’s a party every day. A million thanks to Luigi’s owner Mickey Ciriello for not only making our anniversary so special, but also for allowing me to use Luigi’s as a stage on which my characters can perform.
And now you know the rest of the story.
