Batty Batom Bullpen – Norm Breyfogle

posted on June 8, 2017

Although Norm Bryfogle has worked across the super hero spectrum, my favorite work of his was on his Batman Beyond run. It’s truly an impressive body of work. So I was thrilled when he agreed to join the Batom Bullpen and create a Starbuck Jones cover for me. The result can now be seen in the Gallery section on this site showing the Xaxians about to launch Starbuck into the sun. The death of a superhero was a common trope back in the day, so it was great to incorporate it into one of the Starbuck Jones covers, and Norm did a stellar (pun intended) job with it.

Since working with Norm, I understand he’s run into some serious health problems. So I’d just like to take this moment to wish him a speedy and complete recovery and hope that he’s soon back at the board where he so obviously belongs.

The Batty Batom Bullpen – Bob Layton

posted on June 3, 2017

Bob Layton, the artist of a way cool cover from the Batty Batom Bullpen recently released in the gallery, is best known for his run with David Michelinie on Iron Man where together they took the character to new heights (or lows) with the story of Tony Stark’s alcoholism. No one had attempted anything quite as permanently character changing as that before, and it was beautifully written and rendered.

His Starbuck Jones cover is a gem as well and pretty much speaks for itself. When it came in and I saw the tentacles reaching in from off panel, I immediately decided that it just be the same beast that Michael Gilbert described on his cover… the Octo-Shark. While I did work that into the story arc in the strip about Holly’s comic book safari for her son, I find myself wishing now that I had added a blurb about that on this cover. At the time, I was reluctant to cover up any of the gorgeous art, but I soon got over that and began slapping title boxes on the subsequent covers (sorry, Neal Adams and Tom Palmer). Ah well, hindsight.

But I didn’t cover up any of Bob’s art, so it’s all there to be be enjoyed and possibly acquired by you at the Heritage auction of these covers in November for the benefit of the Lisa’s Legacy Fund for Cancer Research.

Batty Batom Bullpen – Don Perlin

The latest Batom Comics cover revealed in the Komix Korner cover gallery is by Don Perlin. When I first talked with Don (who couldn’t be a nicer guy by the way) about doing a cover, I offered him the Arizona Ranger. He immediately rattled off about a half dozen ideas for the Arizona Ranger culminating with a description of the Ranger on his horse, shooting the gun out of one bad guy’s hand and having to bullet ricochet to knock the gun from a second bad guy’s hand… in a bar. I just laughed and asked him how soon how could get started. He then proceeded to spitball another half dozen ideas for a Lunar Cadets cover and one was so cool that he actually ended up doing two covers for me. Even though one Lunar cadets cover had already been done, Don created a second one for me focusing on the Cadets freshman year.

The Arizona Ranger cover will have to wait just a bit to be revealed, but the cover with the young Lunar Cadets is up there now. You can see it by heading over to the Gallery section on this site and learn all about the upcoming Batom Comics covers auction for the Lisa’s Legacy Fund for Cancer Research while you’re there.
